Royal Bath & West Show, May 2010

Almost before the members had time to draw breath, it's the annual Royal Bath & West Show, the biggest event in ESSMEE's calendar. The weather was once again stunning, and a very respectable total of 7,100 paying passengers were carried over the four days of the Show (2009: 6,900).

It's becoming a bit of a habit, but once again we played host to a royal VIP. This year we were delighted that HRH Sophie, Countess of Wessex, found time to visit the Railway. As you can see from the images below, we made her especially welcome!

1. At the beginning of a busy day, the crew take a breather while raising steam.

2. The intense running over the Show requires the track to be in perfect order.

3. A busy scene in the loop, 'Sara' and 'Ladybird' to the fore. Hot work for both drivers and servicing crews!

4. An unusual view point from the cab of 'Ladybird', as 'Sara' brings another train over the crossing and the crowds wait their turn.

5.  A busy scene at the Bath & West Railway caught in this panoramic shot of the crossing, signal box, station, turntable and steaming bays.

6. Chairman George White driving 'Shepton' heads a train through the shady woods after crossing the bow-string bridge.

7. The royal train and its driver. The B&WR now has this duty down to a fine art, and it is one we always enjoy .

8. Guard Owen Jones giving HRH  some appropriate advice for riding on the B&WR.

9.  The Royal Train about to set off on its journey. Perhaps we should issue appropriate parasols?
